TMJ/TMD

Do you suffer from chronic headaches, intermittent ringing in your ears, clicking, popping, or discomfort when you move your jaw? Does the joint around your jaw feel sore or tender? Is it sometimes difficult to open your mouth?

These are some symptoms of TMD (temporomandibular disorder), which affects a joint on your face. If you have one or more of these symptoms, Desoto Family Dental Care can help. TMD often results from injury or overuse of that particular joint, resulting in headache problems, jaw tenderness, and more.

TMD can be caused by a number of different issues, including:

  • Injury: If the meniscus cartilage around your jaw has been injured, you might end up with TMD. We can help treat your injured jaw to ease pain.
  • Teeth grinding: Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can sometimes cause TMD. Tooth grinding is involuntary and sometimes occurs during sleep. If bruxism goes untreated, complications can occur, including tooth and jaw deterioration. If you grind your teeth at night, we can provide a special bite guard to help minimize the impact grinding has on your teeth.
  • Misaligned bite: A bad bite or a misaligned jaw can also result in the need for TMJ therapy. While getting used to a realignment may take some time, we can help you get your bite back on track.
