Do you suffer from frequent severe chronic headaches, intermittent ringing in your ears, or even jaw discomfort when you speak or chew? Has it become more difficult for you to floss or brush your teeth? Does the joint around your jaw feel sore or tender, and does it pop, grate, or click? Is it sometimes hard to open your mouth?
A combination of these symptoms can indicate that you have a problem with your TMJ (temporomandibular joint) or even may have what is called TMD (temporomandibular disorder). TMD is caused by misuse or overuse of your TMJ, resulting in headache problems, jaw tenderness/soreness, discomfort, ear ringing, and more.
TMD can be caused by a number of different issues, including:
- Injury: If at some time you injured the meniscus cartilage around your jaw, it can result in TMD or require TMJ treatment. We can help treat your injured jaw so that you can continue to have great oral health.
- Tooth grinding: Tooth grinding–also known as bruxism–can cause TMD. Tooth grinding is usually involuntary, and frequently occurs during sleep. If bruxism goes untreated, it can cause a number of problems–including both tooth and jaw deterioration. One of the best things that we can do for tooth grinding is to fit you with a special bite guard that helps stop the impact on your teeth from tooth grinding.
- Misaligned bite: A bad bite or a misaligned jaw can result in the need for TMJ treatment. Do not worry, although it may take some adjusting, we can help you get your bite back on track.
We understand how uncomfortable TMD can be as it interferes with your busy daily life. Regardless of how bad your TMJ issue may be, we want to help you get back on the path to having great oral health for the years to come.
Our kind and caring staff work hard to provide comfort and relief to our patients who are suffering from TMD. Using the latest in modern dental technology, we can help you stop this disorder in its tracks.
